BYD's Tiny PHEV Hatch Is Real — But Don't Expect It Here Yet
The Dolphin G brings plug-in hybrid tech to a Polo-sized package, but BYD Australia isn't planning to stock it.

BYD has unveiled the Dolphin G, its smallest plug-in hybrid to date, targeting European city car buyers with a package roughly the size of a Volkswagen Polo. It looks sharp, promises over 1000km of hybrid range, and sits in a segment crying out for affordable PHEV options. The catch for WA buyers? BYD Australia has flat-out said it's not on the local agenda — at least not yet.
What Is the Dolphin G?
Despite sharing a name, the Dolphin G is not simply a plug-in hybrid version of the electric Dolphin already sold here. It's an entirely new vehicle with its own bespoke body, shorter overall than the standard Dolphin but longer than BYD's entry-level Atto 1 EV. At 4160mm long and 1825mm wide, it sits in an interesting middle ground — narrower than a Toyota Corolla in length, but wider than a Yaris. Think Honda Jazz proportions with smoother, more contemporary styling.
Power comes from BYD's plug-in hybrid system pairing a small petrol engine with a single front-mounted electric motor. BYD is claiming more than 1000km of total driving range under European WLTP testing conditions — the kind of number that would make a long Perth-to-Albany run look straightforward. Exact figures for engine size, power output, battery capacity, and electric-only range haven't been confirmed yet, with full details expected when European orders open in the coming weeks.
BYD describes the Dolphin G as the first model developed specifically for overseas markets including Europe — though that claim does conveniently sidestep the Shark 6 ute, which is also not sold in China.
Should WA Buyers Pay Attention?
Honestly, yes — even if it's not coming here right now.
A compact PHEV hatch in this size class would make a lot of sense for Perth drivers doing daily suburban kilometres on electric power, with a petrol engine available for longer runs up to Mandurah, the Hills, or further north. With WA fuel prices consistently sitting above the national average and registration costs that reward lower-emission vehicles, the financial logic of a small PHEV stacks up well for local conditions.
The Dolphin G's closest rivals in Australia currently include the Toyota Yaris Cross hybrid and the MG 3 hybrid — neither of which offers a plug-in option. A sub-$35,000 PHEV hatch from BYD could genuinely shake up that segment if it arrives.
The reason for cautious optimism is simple: every right-hand-drive BYD launched in the UK has subsequently made it to Australia. The Dolphin G is expected to be sold in the UK. BYD Australia hasn't said never — just not yet.
What Happens Next
European pricing and full specifications are due in the coming weeks as orders open there. After that, it'll be a matter of watching whether BYD Australia quietly adds it to future planning — or keeps holding firm.
If you're in the market for a small, efficient hatch right now, the existing electric Dolphin remains on sale locally and represents solid value in the small EV space. But if a PHEV option with serious range is what you're waiting for, the Dolphin G is worth keeping on your radar. Just don't hold your breath for a 2025 delivery date.
