Mercedes-AMG G63 Cabriolet Is Coming — And It'll Cost a Fortune

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class Cabriolet is making a comeback, and if you thought the regular G-Wagen was an audacious way to spend money, wait until you see what the open-top version costs.

Mercedes-Benz has confirmed via social media that the G-Class Cabriolet will return as a production model in 2027, with the Mercedes-AMG G63 leading the charge. It's been more than a decade since you could buy a soft-top G-Class — the last one rolled out of production in 2013 — and this new version is a far more sophisticated machine than anything that came before it.

What We Know About the G63 Cabriolet

Unlike the original three-door W460-series G-Class Cabriolet from 1979, this new model uses a five-door body — so there's room for rear passengers to enjoy the open air too. The camouflaged teaser images show AMG-specific LED headlights and tail-lights, with the externally mounted spare wheel cover incorporating a third brake light (on the hard-top, that sits at the top of the rear window).

The folding fabric roof is electrically operated, opening over both rows of seats before tucking neatly away at the rear — no manual clips required, unlike the old model. Better still, the mechanism appears to work remotely via keyfob or smartphone app.

Under the bonnet, side-exit exhausts and the engine note in the teaser video point firmly at AMG's 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8. In Australian-market spec, the current G63 produces 430kW and 850Nm, sent through a nine-speed automatic to all four wheels. Expect the Cabriolet to carry the same setup.

The convertible will be available exclusively in AMG form — no diesel, no electric variant.

What It'll Mean for WA Buyers

For anyone in WA considering one of these, the budget conversation starts well before the sticker price. The current G63 hard-top opens at $372,327 before on-road costs in Australia, with the Offroad Pro variant at $387,927 plus ORCs. The Cabriolet is expected to carry a premium on top of that — so realistically, you're looking at well over $400,000 drive-away once WA's stamp duty and registration are factored in.

Mercedes-Benz Australia has not yet confirmed whether the G63 Cabriolet will reach local showrooms, but given Australia is one of the brand's stronger markets for AMG product, it would be a surprise if it didn't.

From a practical WA perspective, the open-top G63 does make a certain kind of sense. Whether you're cruising through Perth's northern suburbs or heading out on a long weekend to the Wheatbelt or Margaret River, a convertible with genuine off-road credentials is a genuinely rare thing. The G-Class was never really bought for its value proposition — it's bought for what it represents — and a Cabriolet version turns that statement up considerably.
