2027 Geely EX5: Bigger Power, New Look — What WA Buyers Should Know
A major update to one of Australia's best-selling EVs is coming, with significantly more power and a refreshed design.

The Geely EX5 has been one of the standout EV stories of 2026 — and it's about to get a serious upgrade. Leaked certification documents from China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology reveal a substantially updated 2027 model is in the works, with more power, a refreshed exterior, and a handful of practical changes that Australian buyers will likely appreciate.
More Power, Smarter Design
The headline change is under the bonnet. The current EX5 runs a 160kW/320Nm electric motor — solid, but nothing that'll raise eyebrows. The updated model jumps to 245kW, a near 53% power increase that should make it a genuine rival to the Tesla Model Y and BYD Sealion 7 in the mid-size electric SUV segment.
On the outside, expect revised front and rear bumpers, new wheel options, and updated badging with a contemporary 'GEELY' typeface across the rear. The more notable change for everyday usability: traditional door handles replace the flush pop-out units currently on Australian models. That swap is being driven by Chinese safety regulations targeting handles that freeze shut in cold climates — a non-issue in Perth summers, but a sensible change regardless.

Some reports also suggest the charging port may move from the front quarter panel to the rear — a layout many WA drivers prefer for ease of use at public chargers. That detail isn't confirmed in the official images yet, but it's worth watching.
The interior is largely under wraps, though regulatory filing images hint at minor updates. There's also speculation about more physical buttons making a return, as Chinese regulators push back against fully touchscreen-dependent cabins — a shift many drivers across WA would quietly welcome on long runs between Perth and regional centres.
How It's Selling Right Now
The EX5 isn't just generating buzz — it's producing numbers. In 2026, it moved 4,453 units nationally, nearly double the BYD Atto 3 and Kia EV5, and ten times the Leapmotor C10. In the mid-size electric SUV class, only the Tesla Model Y and BYD Sealion 7 are ahead of it.
For WA buyers already considering the current model, the existing EX5 has been updated consistently since its 2025 launch — Geely has rolled out software upgrades and added a larger battery option, showing a willingness to keep improving the car post-sale rather than waiting for the next generation.
Should WA Buyers Wait?
If you're in the market now, the current EX5 represents strong value — particularly with WA's ongoing fuel prices making the switch to electric more compelling by the month. If you're not in a rush, the 2027 update looks like a meaningful step up, not a cosmetic refresh.
One caveat: the updated model will also carry a LiDAR pod on the roof for advanced autonomous driving functions — but these high-end features have historically been stripped out of Australian export versions. Don't bank on getting those locally.
No Australian pricing or confirmed release date for the 2027 model has been announced yet. Keep an eye on AutoReady WA for updates as they come through.
