MG S6 EV: Under $50K Family SUV That Beats Tesla on Range

If you've been watching the electric SUV market and waiting for something that makes genuine financial sense, the 2026 MG S6 EV is worth a serious look. It's priced from $49,990 drive-away and claims 530km of range on a single charge — that's more than a Tesla Model Y RWD, for significantly less money.

What You're Getting for the Money

The S6 EV comes in two variants: an Essence RWD at $49,990 drive-away and an Essence AWD at $56,990 drive-away. Both are well-equipped straight out of the box.

Standard kit across both includes 20-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, a 12.8-inch touchscreen, a 10.25-inch instrument cluster, wireless phone charging, and heated and ventilated front seats. The AWD adds a panoramic roof on top of that.

The RWD uses a single 180kW/350Nm rear motor and covers the 0–100km/h sprint in 7.3 seconds. The AWD uses dual motors for 266kW/540Nm combined and gets to 100km/h in 5.1 seconds. Both use a 77kWh nickel-manganese-cobalt battery pack.

Boot space sits at 581 litres behind the rear seats, plus a front storage compartment — 86 litres on the RWD or 67 litres on the AWD. For a family hauling gear around Perth's suburbs or heading down south for the weekend, that's a practical amount of space.

DC fast charging tops out at 144kW, with a claimed 10–80 per cent charge time of 38 minutes. A heat pump and adjustable regenerative braking — including a one-pedal driving mode — come standard on both variants.

How It Stacks Up Against the Competition

The obvious rival is the Tesla Model Y RWD, which comes in at roughly $11,700 to $15,800 more than the S6 EV's entry price, with a shorter claimed range of 466km. The BYD Sealion 7 RWD is another competitor in the same space, priced about $7,000 to $10,800 higher than the MG with a 482km claimed range.

For WA drivers, range matters in a way it simply doesn't in smaller states. Whether you're doing a run to Mandurah, heading up to Geraldton, or tackling the long stretches between regional towns, the S6 EV's 530km WLTP figure gives you a reasonable buffer. That said, WLTP numbers are always optimistic — real-world range on the open highway, especially in summer heat, will be lower. Budget for roughly 80 per cent of the claimed figure as your realistic working range.

With petrol prices in Perth regularly sitting above $2 per litre, the running cost argument for going electric is straightforward. Charging at home overnight is substantially cheaper per kilometre than filling a tank, and the S6 EV's fast-charging capability means road trips don't require lengthy stops.

The S6 EV sits on the same platform as the smaller MG S5 EV (from $38,990), but is a larger vehicle at 4708mm long and 1912mm wide. It's positioned below the premium IM6 (from $60,990) in MG's local line-up, which means it hits the sweet spot for buyers who want space and range without stepping into luxury SUV pricing territory.

Should WA Buyers Pay Attention?

At $49,990 drive-away, the S6 EV is priced right at the threshold where the federal government's fringe benefits tax exemption for electric vehicles starts to make fleet and novated lease buyers take notice. For private buyers, it's a competitive entry price for a vehicle of this size and capability.

The competition in this segment is stiff — Tesla and BYD have strong service networks and brand recognition in Perth — but MG has been expanding its dealer footprint across WA, which matters when it comes to servicing and warranty claims.

The 2026 MG S6 EV is available to order now. If you're in the market for a mid-size electric SUV and your budget caps out around $50,000, this one belongs on your shortlist.
